The National Reading Panel divides reading into
five areas; phonemic awareness, phonics (decoding), fluency, vocabulary
and comprehension.
Our phonemic awareness and decoding strategies are awesome! We can
rapidly turn nonreaders into readers and poor readers into good readers.
When taught one-on-one and combined with supervised practice between
sessions, students who complete our program can decode words with proficiency.
These results are often achieved in fewer than 20 session hours. Once
decoding skills are in place, the reader can profit from fluency, vocabulary
and reading comprehension instruction. Students work one-on-one with a reading instructor. Some students have no difficulty reading words but comprehension is elusive. We teach students to use strategies such as using organizers and visualization to increase understanding of various types of text. Written expression requires a myriad of skills and we specialize in helping students to learn and chose the most appropriate strategies for the task at hand. We can often combine reading comprehension and written expression skills to improve a student's performance in both areas.
